This is getting to be a blog all about Matthew. I'm sorry. It just seems like that is what is in the forefront right now for me.
Okay I've got some big news on this one. Are you ready for it?? Am I ready to actually tell you?
There is a real live boy behind all these posts. He's sweet and smart and handsome. He's funny and busy. He'll ask you a thousand and one questions. He'll notice things you wouldn't dream he would. He's gives limitless hugs. He sings songs to his sisters to keep them entertained and happy. He is a proud son. He tells me he loves me many times in a day. He's always excited to see me.
I do believe he tries very hard to be good. I really do. But he's impulsive and he gets caught up in the moment. That's probably not unusual for 6 yo boys. The thing is most 6 yo boys don't bite girls and get suspended.
Yup, last Thursday Matthew bit an older girl and got suspended.
Do you remember all my posts about trying to get a hold of the spec ed. teacher to get something in place BEFORE this could happen?? I was FURIOUS when I got home on Thursday to this message from the principal. Was I mad at Matthew, heck yeah! But I was more so mad at a school that ignored the issue until it came up and bit them in the ass(sorry for the pun).
Sometimes suspensions are warranted and necessary. I believe that. But in this case the punishment does not fit the crime. He does not understand what suspended is and is more than happy to take the day off of school. I have to fight him to go to school most of the time anyway.
The spec. ed teacher finally called on Friday which was too little too late in my opinion. She made some lame excuses but I know the job and I know she could have found some time somewhere to give me a call. Anyway, she will be doing a baseline to assess Matthew classroom behaviour. But I think the real problems stem from the unstructured time at recess.
It's funny being on this side of the fence since I'm so used to being on the other side. We have a meeting with the principal and teachers on Friday and what I want to know is what THEY are going to put in place for Matthew? How are they going to ensure this does not happen again and what support system are they going to put in place.
Pushy aren't I?

Oh Junie, this is the pits. Are you having to stay home with him or do you have someone to watch him?
I have no doubts Matthew is a sweetheart. I hope the school cooperates better and you guys are able to get to the root of the problem. Good luck!
Oh man Junie, I am sorry.
We all know your Matthew is a great boy! I just hate that all this happening with him :(
I am glad the special ed. teacher finally called but I still can't believe it took her so long. That is good she is doing the baseline for the classroom setting. Hopefully something can be looked into for the unstructured recess.
Good luck with the meeting on Friday!
I hope they have a good plan to offer. I would be SO upset, just like you are. THEY dropped the ball by not responding in a timely manner.
We know Matt is a sweetie. He's just having a rough go of it right now. And don't worry...my blog is pretty much the KayTar blog most of the time. LOL.
